LECTURES

Week 2

We were taught about the basics of Adobe Illustrator on week 2. Then, he asked us to try The Bezier Game which helps us understand the pen tool more. He also went on and show us how to create and trace the shapes for The Vormator Challenge.

Week 3

On week 3, We were tasked to finish our character design. Mr. Hafiz also told us how to use the pathfinder and shape builder tool on Adobe Illustrator by tracing the Adidas logo.

TASK

Week 1

The Vormator Challenge is a project that challenges designers and artist to create a design out of a very minimal palette. This challenge includes 8 shapes that can be used for creating a visual. The design can vary from being a simple animal to a complex eldritch-like monster.

1. Ideas

The first thought that came across my mind is a small hooded creature. I thought this idea might be cute but after I gave it a second thought, I think this idea is too simple and boring.

The next day, I decided to make a more complex looking design. Here are some of the reference I saw and used:

With these two images, I can finally decide on what I wanted to make, a half-lady, half-dragon creature with a blue dress. Before I started working on Illustrator, I made a sketch of my new character design.

2. Shape Tracing

The Vormator challenge provides artists with only 8 shapes to use from. These 8 shapes includes The Zerk, The Drop, The Badge, The Chevron, The Bar, The Wurst, The Cobra, and The Tentacle.

3. Digitalization

After I feel satisfied with my sketch, I opened up Adobe Illustrator and start working on the digitalization process.

I started from the torso, gradually building the shapes to form her leg. Then, I started creating the wings with The Tentacle, Wurst, and The Drop. Finally, I made the head and horns. I decided to make her horns gray and her eyes red.

4. Character Backstory

Louisiana is a half-dragonborn, half-human who lives in the forest on top of a mountain. She got her name from a villager who used to take care of her when she was still a small child. One day, the village got burned down and the villager were caught in the fire, leaving Louisiana alone. The other villagers started to blame Louisiana for starting the fire even though she cannot breathe fire. She was then casted away to a forest, never to be seen again.

I decided to name her Louisiana after one of the lyric from the song Stay Away From My Friends by Pierce The Veil, since it encapsulates the whole backstory for my character.

RATIONALE

Week 2

Mr. Hafiz introduced us on how to use the pen tool from The Bezier Game. Then, he taught us how to alter and modify the lines from the pen tool to trace the 8 shapes given. From there, I finally understand how to trace the 8 shapes and started designing the character.

Week 3

Pathfinder and shape builder was the tools I struggled with before, but on week 2, Mr. Hafiz explained a few ways to utilize these features. So, after class I started using pathfinder to add shadows to the character.

REFLECTIONS

Before I started working on this assignment, I feel like my understanding towards Adobe Illustrator was very lackluster. However after attending Mr. Hafiz's class and watch a few tutorials on YouTube and Instagram, I feel like I'm getting the hang of it.

Honestly, I find this task to be very enjoyable to work on. It was pretty stressful at first, but after I understand the task and finished tracing all of the shapes, I finally found a way to realize my ideas.

In the end, I feel somewhat satisfied with the outcome of this assignment. Even though the project was a little bit challenging, I see this project as a chance to develop my creativity.
