LECTURES

In this lecture, the basic rules of composition were described along with some explanation of rule of thirds and the golden ratio by Mr. Fauzi through an online Zoom Meeting. Some of the compositions revolves around focal points, scaling, balancing elements, and white space. Mr. Fauzi told us that composition is a very important aspect of design since it can create a visual narrative on the design we make.

The rule of thirds is a rule that divides an image into thirds by using two horizontal and two vertical lines along with four intersections that can be used for the focal points of the image. Moreover, if an important element is put on one of the intersection, it can create a natural look on the image.

The rule of thirds can be used for:

  • Using composition techniques that are in line with what naturally pleasing to human eye.
  • A way to creatively utilize negative space.
  • Creating a conversation between the subject and background.

The golden ratio is a mathematical ratio which can be found in nature. When it is used in design, it can create a natural look which can be pleasing to the eye.

PROJECTS

Physical Collage

Mr. Fauzi once mentioned that collage design is a good start for learning the fundamentals of tasked to create a collage with 3 different compositions.

Composition 1

Composition 2

Composition 3

Finally, Mr. Fauzi checked all 3 of my collage compositions. He also gave me several feedbacks regarding the design and placements. So, I decided to change the layouts and move to the gluing process.I've decided to apply the golden ratio to my final composition.

REFLECTIONS

At first, I was struggling at using  the exacto knife since it was my first time using it. I also did not really know what I am doing with the shapes and objects I cut. So, I decided to scrape all of the ideas that I was unsure of. In the end, I compile objects that are related to my favorite artist, Tyler. I think it turned out pretty well.
