Task 2
JUMPLINKS
LECTURES
Week 4
Since we were tasked to work on the background for our character, Mr. Hafiz explained about a few storytelling methods through background. For example, Japanese media tends to focus more on the environment whilst Western media usually emphasize on their characters more.
Mr. Hafiz also demonstrated the way to add gradient to objects.

INSTRUCTIONS
TASK
Week 4
1. References
After working on the character on task 1, Mr. Hafiz instructed us to do the background for the character. Before I started working, I need to look at some reference and ideas so I can get a few inspirations. Since Louisiana lives in the forest and feared by the villagers nearby, I feel that it is best to put her in a dark environment.

2. Sketch
I tried to use the layout from reference 1 and capture the vibe of reference 2 on my sketch. Here is the sketch I came up with. I also decided to add a tree trunk as a foreground.

4. Pokemon Card
I made this character based around my favorite band, Pierce The Veil. Therefore, I named all of her moves and abilities from their songs as well.

Louisiana is a dark and flying type Pokemon. I named her ability Stay Away From My Friends since I named her from one of the lyrics from that song. It connects to her backstory because it was told from the perspective of her old friend. Also, The other two moves are named from Pierce The Veil songs as well.
RATIONALELouisiana is a half-dragonborn, half-human who lives in the forest on top of a mountain. She got her name from a villager who used to take care of her when she was still a small child. One day, the village got burned down and the villager were caught in the fire, leaving Louisiana alone. The other villagers started to blame Louisiana for starting the fire even though she cannot breathe fire. She was then casted away to a forest, never to be seen again.
I decided to make a forest as the background since in her backstory, she was thrown away in the village. I also tried to make the forest dark and gloomy so it can capture the character’s dark atmosphere. But in reality, she’s actually a good person.
REFLECTIONS
I will admit, creating backgrounds is one of the things I am still lacking at until this day. However, In this task, I learned a few composition techniques from the Framed Ink PDF book. I also learned some ways to utilize color to make the background more atmospheric using color palletes I picked from the moodboards.
Overall, I find this task pretty challenging to do. However, I learned a lot from working on this task. I also had fun when I was designing the Pokemon card, putting the movesets and abilities because I used to be a very big Pokemon fan back in elementary.
