LECTURES

This week, Mr. Fauzi lectured us about a few important design principles to take notes of. The principles of design are a set of rules designers must follow to create an appealing and effective composition.

1. The 7 Principles of Poster Design

  • Emphasis controls hierarchy and draws the attention of the audience and holds them in.
  • Balance & Alignment is all about placing and space different elements so they can form a structure which feels organized and connected.
  • Contrast creates space and difference between elements in your design. Background needs to be in different color so that both elements and background can work harmoniously together.
  • Proportion is the visual size and weight of each elements and how they harmonize with each other. It helps to approach design in sections, instead of as a whole.
  • Repetition unifies and strengthens a design by repeating a pattern or motif multiple times.
  • Movement controls the elements to draws attention of the consumers eyes from one to the next so the information is communicated properly to the audience.
  • White Space deals with the empty space or page with no elements in ones composition. It gives the composition more room to breathe.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECTS

Re-color Black & White

Part 1

This task is divided into two parts and I will start from exercise one. To begin, I color the face of the man on the photo with the brush tool. Next, I applied blending mode (overlay) to the face. After that, I did the same to the lips, hair, eyes, and shirt. Lastly, I color the background by using fill and inverted the selection while I clean it up with brush tool.

This is the final result for the first part of the task.

Part 2

For task 2, I need to do basically the same steps, but this time we have references for the colors.

Before anything else, I need to select the hair area with free selection tool and then refined it with selection brush tool. Next, I need to pick the colors from the references using the eyedropper tool. Also, I need to smoothen the selection out with refine edge brush tool.  I basically just need to repeat these steps over and over again for the other parts of the portrait (lips, skin, shirt, and eyes).

I decided to change the shirt color into dark gray and applied a pink background instead. Here is the final result.

REFLECTIONS

This task made me realized that putting colors into a black and white image can make the image brighter, almost like making the image more lively. I also learned how mask objects to color specific parts of a photo and to use features such as overlay and soft light to color an image. Overall, I feel satisfied with the result since I can make the colors look natural.
